Since the 19th century, with little variation, 4 major players have been known to cause CABM: Streptococcus pneumoniaeHaemophilus influenzae Type B, Neisseria meningitidis, and Listeria monocytogenes, with the addition of group B Streptococcus and Escherichia coli in neonates [90,91]. Mortality during the 19th century was essentially 100 % in children and 98 % in adults. Currently, mortality ranges from 15 % to 30 % [90,92,93].

Dr. Miguel Sierra-Hoffman, Dr. Amy Madril, and the team of ECMH worked together with other Doctors from around the world to contribute to case studies in this regard with their findings.

A few highlights from the article include:

  • Meningoencephalitis is a common complication in typhus group Rickettsia infection.
  • Presence of neurologic complications increases fatality rates of infection.
  • Improved testing for typhus group Rickettsia is needed to avoid complications/death.
  • We advocate for awareness of this re-emerging infection in the medical community.

” By writing this manuscript, our hope is that we have awakened both core academic institutions and private industry to the dire need of advancing diagnostics for TGR. It is time to leave the primitive serological testing of the 20th century behind, and enter into the era of modern / rapid diagnostics, targeted treatment, and improved patient care. It is time to give TGR the recognition it deserves, as the most common vector borne disease of Texas and many bordering regions. As of the writing of this manuscript and to the best of our knowledge, we are providing the largest TGR CNS infection case series since 2015 with a total of 29 cases in the universal table (Table 2). We believe that this growing list is a testament of concern for the need to review this reemerging infection. No funding agencies or grant monies were involved in this manuscript.”

This is just another example of how knowledgeable Dr. Miguel Sierra-Hoffman and the team with El Campo Memorial Hospital is to contributing to modern day medicine. We would like to congratulate our team, as this is an extraordinary honor. To view the full Article, please visit the link below.
